Cannabis Edibles Guide: Dosing, Effects Timeline, and How to Choose

Cottonmouth Dispensary's edibles guide: they hit differently than any other cannabis product, and understanding how they work is the key to a great experience.

The Two-Hour Rule

Before anything else, memorize this: never take a second dose of an edible until at least two hours have passed since the first. This is the single most important rule in cannabis edibles. Edibles can take 30 minutes to two full hours to kick in, and impatient re-dosing is the number one cause of uncomfortable overconsumption experiences. The effects will come. Wait for them.

WAIT 2 FULL HOURS before taking more. This is the golden rule of edibles. Your body needs time to digest, absorb, and metabolize THC through the liver. Even if you feel nothing after one hour, be patient. The effects of an edible are not optional — they are inevitable. Re-dosing too early is how most bad experiences happen.

How Edibles Work: The Science of 11-Hydroxy-THC

When you smoke or vape cannabis, delta-9-THC enters your lungs and passes directly into your bloodstream. The onset is rapid and the experience is familiar. Edibles take an entirely different route through your body, and that route changes the chemistry of the experience.

11-OH-THC
11-Hydroxy-THC: the liver metabolite that makes edibles hit harder and last longer than inhaled cannabis

When you eat a cannabis edible, it travels through your stomach and into your small intestine, where THC is absorbed into the bloodstream. From there, it passes through your liver in what is called first-pass metabolism. In the liver, delta-9-THC is converted into 11-hydroxy-THC, a metabolite that crosses the blood-brain barrier more efficiently than delta-9-THC itself. This is why edibles feel stronger, last longer, and produce a more body-centered experience than inhaled cannabis, even at comparable doses.

Two Pathways, Two Experiences

Smoking / Vaping Path

Lungs → Blood → Brain
Delta-9-THC enters the bloodstream directly through the lungs. Onset in 1-5 minutes. Peak within 15-30 minutes. Duration 1-3 hours. You feel it quickly and it fades relatively fast.

Edible Path

Stomach → Liver → 11-Hydroxy-THC → Brain
THC is converted into the more potent 11-hydroxy-THC metabolite during liver processing. Onset in 30-120 minutes. Peak at 90 min to 3 hours. Duration 4-8+ hours.

This liver conversion is also why onset takes so long. Your digestive system needs time to process the food, absorb the THC, and send it through the liver. Factors like your metabolism, whether you have eaten recently, your body weight, and your individual liver enzyme activity all affect how quickly and how intensely you feel an edible.

Types of Cannabis Edibles

Cannabis edibles come in a wide range of formats, each with slightly different characteristics for onset, duration, and user experience.

Gummies

The most popular edible format. Precise doses (typically 5mg or 10mg per piece), wide flavor range, and easy to portion. The default recommendation for first-time edible users because dosing is straightforward and predictable.

Chocolates

Cannabis-infused chocolates offer a richer flavor experience. Bars are often scored into individual squares for easy dosing. The fat content in cocoa butter may help THC absorb slightly faster in the digestive tract.

Mints & Lozenges

Small, discreet, and typically low-dose (2.5-5mg per piece). Some THC is absorbed sublingually (under the tongue) before swallowing, which can speed onset to 15-30 minutes. Excellent for microdosing.

Beverages (Nano)

Cannabis drinks use nanoemulsion technology to break THC into tiny, water-soluble particles. Faster onset (15-30 minutes) and shorter duration (2-4 hours). Feels more like the timing of a cocktail than a traditional edible.

Capsules

THC in pill form. The most clinical, no-frills approach to edible dosing. Tasteless, precise, and easy to integrate into a daily routine. Standard edible onset and duration (60-120 minutes onset, 4-8 hours duration).

The Dosing Spectrum

Cannabis affects everyone differently. Body weight, metabolism, tolerance, and individual endocannabinoid system sensitivity all play a role. The following ranges represent general guidance, not absolute rules:

Level Dose Effects Best For
Microdose 1-2.5mg Sub-perceptual to barely noticeable. Mild mood lift, subtle relaxation. First-time users, anxiety-prone individuals, those who want to remain fully functional
Low 2.5-5mg Gentle euphoria, light relaxation, enhanced sensory perception. Standard starting dose for most new users. Comfortable and manageable.
Standard 5-10mg Moderate euphoria, noticeable body relaxation, altered perception. Most common recreational dose for regular but not heavy consumers
High 10-25mg Strong euphoria, significant body effects, impaired coordination. Experienced consumers with established tolerance only
Very High 25mg+ Intense effects across all dimensions. Significant likelihood of adverse effects for most people. High-tolerance consumers only. Not recommended for most.

"Start at 2.5-5mg for your first edible experience. You can always take more next time. You cannot un-eat what you have already consumed."

Effects Timeline

Plan your schedule around these timelines. If you take an edible at 7 PM, expect to feel effects until at least 11 PM, and possibly into the early morning hours. Do not drive or operate machinery during this time.

Reading Edible Labels

Edible packaging in New Jersey must display specific information. Here is what to look for:

  • Total THC per package: The total milligrams of THC in the entire product. A package might contain 100mg total.
  • THC per serving: The milligrams in a single serving. If the package is 100mg with 10 pieces, each piece is 10mg.
  • Number of servings: How many individual doses are in the package.
  • THC:CBD ratio: Some edibles contain both THC and CBD. Common ratios include 1:1 (equal parts), 2:1, and 4:1. CBD can moderate some of THC's intensity.
  • Ingredients list: Check for allergens (nuts, dairy, gluten) just as you would with any food product.
Watch Out: The most common label confusion is between total THC per package and THC per serving. A bag of gummies might say "100mg" on the front, but that is the entire package. If there are 10 gummies inside, each one is 10mg. Always check the per-serving number before eating. Consuming the entire package as a beginner could mean taking 10-20 times the recommended starting dose.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Most negative edible experiences are preventable. Here are the five most common mistakes and how to avoid them:

Re-Dosing Too Early

The most common mistake by far. You feel nothing after 45 minutes and eat another piece. Then both doses hit at once. Always wait the full two hours before considering a second dose.

Empty Stomach

Edibles can hit harder and faster on an empty stomach with less predictable results. Eating a light meal beforehand creates a more controlled, gradual experience with fewer surprises.

Ignoring Per-Serving Dose

A package may contain 100mg or more. One serving is not the whole thing. Always check the THC per serving, not just the total THC per package. One gummy might be your entire dose.

Mixing with Alcohol

Alcohol intensifies THC effects significantly. Combining them can lead to nausea, dizziness, and anxiety. If you are consuming an edible, skip the drinks, especially while learning your tolerance.

Improper Storage

Heat degrades THC and can melt gummies and chocolates into an uneven mess where one piece has far more THC than another. Store edibles in a cool, dark place, away from children and pets.

What to Do If You Have Consumed Too Much

Even experienced consumers occasionally overdo it. If you or someone you are with has consumed too much of an edible, remember that you are going to be okay. No one has ever fatally overdosed on cannabis. The discomfort is temporary and it will pass.

Recovery Steps:
  1. Stay calm. Remind yourself that the discomfort is temporary and will pass. No one has fatally overdosed on cannabis.
  2. Find a safe, comfortable space. Lie down, dim the lights, put on soothing music or a familiar TV show.
  3. Hydrate. Drink water or juice. Avoid alcohol and caffeine.
  4. Try black pepper. Chewing on a few black peppercorns may reduce THC-related anxiety, possibly due to the terpene caryophyllene.
  5. Use CBD if available. CBD oil or a CBD tincture may help moderate the intensity of THC.
  6. Sleep it off. If you can sleep, that is often the best remedy. You will feel normal when you wake up.
  7. Be patient. Time is the cure. Effects will subside within a few hours.
