Medical Cannabis in New Jersey
New Jersey has had a medical cannabis program since 2010, and it expanded significantly with the Jake Honig Compassionate Use Medical Cannabis Act in 2019. The state recognizes a broad list of qualifying conditions, and physicians can now recommend cannabis for any condition they believe would benefit from it.
As of 2026, New Jersey has over 130,000 registered medical cannabis patients. The program runs alongside the adult-use recreational market, but medical patients receive important benefits: exemption from the 6.625% state sales tax, higher purchase limits, and access to a medical discount at Cottonmouth Dispensary.
How to Get a Medical Cannabis Card in NJ
- See a registered physician. Your doctor must be registered with the NJ Medicinal Marijuana Program. If your doctor is not registered, you can visit a qualifying physician through services like Veriheal or NuggMD.
- Receive a recommendation. Your physician will evaluate your condition and, if appropriate, provide a written recommendation for medical cannabis.
- Register with the NJ Department of Health. Create an account at the NJ Medical Marijuana Registry portal, upload your physician's recommendation, and pay the state registration fee.
- Receive your card. Once approved, you'll receive a digital or physical medical cannabis ID card. This card is valid at any licensed dispensary in New Jersey, including Cottonmouth.
The entire process typically takes 1-2 weeks from your physician visit to card in hand.
Qualifying Conditions
New Jersey's medical cannabis program covers a wide range of conditions. The state allows physicians to recommend cannabis for any condition they deem appropriate, but the most commonly qualifying conditions include:
- Chronic pain
- Anxiety
- PTSD
- Insomnia / sleep disorders
- Cancer (and treatment side effects)
- Multiple sclerosis
- Epilepsy / seizure disorders
- Crohn's disease
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Glaucoma
- HIV/AIDS
- ALS
- Tourette syndrome
- Chronic nausea
- Migraines
- Muscle spasticity
If your condition is not listed above, speak with a qualifying physician. New Jersey physicians have broad discretion in recommending cannabis.

Choosing the Right Product for Your Condition
Different conditions respond best to different product types, cannabinoid ratios, and consumption methods. Here are general guidelines:
- Chronic pain: Flower and vapes for immediate relief. Edibles and tinctures for long-lasting relief. CBD:THC balanced ratios can be effective.
- Anxiety: Start with low-THC, high-CBD products. Tinctures provide precise dosing. Avoid high-THC concentrates which can worsen anxiety.
- Sleep: Indica-dominant flower or edibles taken 1-2 hours before bed. CBN (cannabinol) products are increasingly popular for sleep.
- Inflammation: Topicals for localized relief. CBD-dominant products for systemic inflammation.
- Nausea: Vapes or flower for fast-acting relief. Tinctures (sublingual) as an alternative to inhalation.
